Dr. Elisha Atkins was a man of many interests.

A former professor and specialist in infectious diseases at Yale University, he fell in love with nature as a young boy, becoming an avid bird-watcher and later transforming his family estate into a nature education center for the Massachusetts Audubon Society.

As a student at Harvard College, from which he graduated in 1942, he indulged his passions for literature and history, developing a lifelong fascination with classics, including Homer's "The Iliad."
