For a quarter of a century, Rena Beans has worked at seven
Prince William County schools, making sure children don't cross the
line -- literally. She is a school crossing guard, and over the past
25 years, Beans -- with a pair of white gloves and a silver-colored
whistle -- has halted thousands of cars, seeing to it that kids stay
safely inside the crosswalk to get to the other side of the road.
"It's the safety zone," Beans said.
Beans is the most experienced of the county's working crossing
guards and on June 4, she was given a service award pin by the
police department, honoring her years of service.
But this summer, for the first time since she started, Beans,
