PETERBOROUGH, N.H. Deep in the woods at The MacDowell Colony, in
isolated cottages built of wood and stone, some of the most important
American artists of the last century have sought, and found,
inspiration.
The small town of Peterborough has, by all accounts, benefited
from supporting the famous arts colony, and now boasts its own
reputation for arts and culture. But in a move that could divide the
town and its best-known landmark, local officials said last week that
the nonprofit institution should pay for town services. Faced with
the colony's resistance, they voted to take the issue to court.
