Jeff Hale's friends describe his old digs, Davis Square's Someday Cafe, as an allegory for his life. "Surviving in spite of it all," said his longtime friend and former roommate Scott Bowden. "That was Jeff."

A mix of grunge music and Mr. Hale's infectious guffaw were main attractions for a ragtag bunch of regulars who squeezed among its six tables to imbibe their morning jolt.

They were undeterred by the cafe's plastic-tarp makeshift window on the side, an air-conditioner dripping like the percolator, and visible sparks and dust flying below the battered floorboards during the renovation of the Somerville Theater, which is next door.
