Dr. William Berenberg was a father figure to three generations of doctors he trained at Children's Hospital in Boston.

"I think he considered the staff at the hospital his second family," his son, Jeffrey of Kaneohe, Hawaii, said yesterday.

The hospital staff felt the same about Dr. Berenberg, affectionately calling him "The Godfather."

Dr. Berenberg, 89, the retired director of the hospital's cerebral palsy division, died Wednesday at Caritas Norwood Hospital. The cause of death was a small bowel obstruction, according to his son, who is also a physician.
