LONGMEADOW - Sam Saunders said he would call his grandpa last
night to tell him about his day, and possibly boast of his hole-in-
one.
It seems a normal exchange, but it surely makes the other golfers
at this year's US Junior Amateur a bit jealous.
Sure, they can call their grandpas, too. But when they do, Arnold
Palmer won't be the one answering the phone.
Saunders, whose mother, Amy, is Palmer's daughter, was about 3
when the golfing legend first gave him a lesson.
"He put my hands on the club and said, `Don't change it,' and I
haven't," the 17-year-old Saunders remembered yesterday after
finishing his first 18 holes of stroke play at Longmeadow Country
Club with a 2-under-par 68.
