If we had been at Fenway Park, where the Sox were taking a beating
from the Toronto Blue Jays, R.E.M.'s "Everybody Hurts" would have
made an appropriate soundtrack. Instead, we were down the street at
Eastern Standard, the latest Kenmore Square hot spot, and "Everybody
Hurts" was being sung in jazzy style by Paul Anka.
Nobody, at least at our table, was hurting in the least.
At the playful Eastern Standard, the room's tile floors, marble
bar, and leather seats seem designed to cultivate an almost retro
sense of conviviality that would make hurting difficult, if not
