LITTLETON Paul E. Smith, 82, of Littleton, a retired assistant
professor at MIT, died Oct. 8.
Born in Elizabeth, N.J., Mr. Smith graduated from the public
schools in Verona, N.J. After high school he attended Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute until joining the Naval Reserve in 1943. During
World War II he served as a junior officer in the engine room of the
escort USS Makassar Straights deployed in the Pacific. He returned to
Rensselaer after his military service in 1946 and received his
bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. He continued his
education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he
