The Republican Party's national fund-raising committees
collected almost $76 million in "soft money" from corporations and
wealthy individuals in the first 18 months of this election cycle,
according to an analysis of Federal Election Commission records by
the public interest lobby group Common Cause. That total is more
than double the $35 million the GOP committees raised during the
same period in 1991-92, the last presidential election cycle.
Corporations are barred from giving directly to federal
candidates and individuals can give no more than $20,000 a year to
national party committees to directly aid federal candidates. But
