Article: SLEEPING PILLS CAN HELP THE ELDERLY

AS A PHYSICIAN, I appreciate Dr. Gregg D. Jacobs's letter (Dec. 23) responding to "Is long-term use of sleeping pills OK?" (Health/ Science, Dec. 19) and his citation of the literature indicating the long-term side effects of sleeping pills.

However, as a geriatrician and primary care provider, I was disappointed with this response from an insomnia specialist.

It is well known that many elderly are plagued by sleeping problems. Simply citing the literature without offering alternative ways to manage insomnia is neither helpful for patients or to primary care providers who would like to offer their patients other options.
