DALLAS - Forget Mo Vaughn's $80 million deal with Anaheim,
Darren Dreifort's $55 million deal with the Dodgers, Alex Rodriguez's
$252 million contract with the Rangers. After Chan Ho Park won just
12 times in 40 starts, and spent 205 days on the disabled list, the
Dallas Morning News labeled his five-year, $65 million deal with
Texas "the worst free agent contract ever."
Teams took notice. Since that December 2001 deal, no pitcher had
procured a contract longer than four years.
Until Nov. 28, when the Blue Jays dumped $47 million over B.J.
Ryan's head, wooing the large lefthander to work closing time in
Toronto through 2010.
And they did it again yesterday, securing prized righthander A.J. ...
