With first place on the line in the NL West yesterday, the Los
Angeles Dodgers used a seven-run fifth inning to beat the San Diego
Padres, 9-2, before a sellout crowd of 53,629 at Jack Murphy
Stadium. The Dodgers lead the Padres by 1 1/2 games.
Ismael Valdes (15-7) re-established the Dodgers' pitching
dominance, allowing three hits -- including Jody Reed's two-run
homer -- in seven innings. He struck out seven and walked two. "He
only made one bad pitch, to Jody," Padres outfielder Tony Gwynn
said. "He was absolutely painting the black."
Said Valdes: "I was lucky and I was trying to hit the corners,
and I think that helped me a lot. If we lose this game, we'd be in
second place." ...
