"I'm sorry, I haven't slept in two days," says New York graphic designer Ed Roth after forgetting his age. "I can't keep up."

Roth, who is based in Williamsburg, N.Y., and who finally remembers that he is 37, is depriving himself of sleep to keep up with demand for his stencils, which are being ordered in large quantities by stores where stencils were previously verboten. Last year Roth started Stencil1, a company that sells stencils depicting jolly Rogers, retro joysticks, and a woman with a very fierce afro. In the process, he is transforming the stencil's reputation from cute craft of the suburban mom to cool hipster home-decorating tool.
