Fidelity Investments yesterday said a laptop computer with personal data on 196,000 retirement account customers was stolen last week, prompting it to send out security alerts to affected individuals.

Fidelity, the Boston mutual fund giant, didn't release many details of the circumstances surrounding the theft, but said the laptop held information on participants in the retirement accounts of computer maker Hewlett-Packard Co., included names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, compensation, and other retirement-related information.
