"Brother of Sleep" tells an exhilarating and ultimately tragic
tale about the curse of genius. Adapted for the screen by Austrian
writer Robert Schneider from his best-selling 1992 novel, the film
opens with a long, swooping shot over the vast and terrifying beauty
of the Alps. As director and cinematographer Joseph Vilsmaier's
camera zooms above the snow-capped peaks, a palpable sense of danger
lurks beneath their awesome majesty, underscored by an insistent low
buzzing on the soundtrack. The monotonous tone -- somewhere between
noise and music -- is like the sound of blood rushing to one's head.
Muffled below this humming thrums an occasional distant pulse, like
the beating of a heart ...
