Gloucester Democrats face an awkward obstacle as they seek to build local support for their party's bid to reclaim the governor's office: The city's Democratic mayor, John Bell, is not with them.

In a move that has created a small stir in the area's political circles, Bell has endorsed Lieutenant Governor Kerry Healey in her quest for the corner office, going so far as to speak on the Beverly Republican's behalf at her Feb. 8 campaign kickoff in Boston.

His public support of Healey has perplexed and disappointed active Democrats from the Gloucester area, who like their counterparts elsewhere in the state are eager to end the GOP's 16-year hold on the governor's seat.
