Baby food manufacturers, stung by criticism from consumer
groups and inspired by the recent success of products being promoted
as more healthful, are making changes in their product lines. But
many pediatricians and nutritionists say the changes may not yield
any particular advantages for babies' health.
Heinz has purchased Earth's Best, an increasingly popular
organic line that previously had been available only in some grocery
and health food chains. And in its regular Heinz brands, it is
reformulating many recipes to eliminate added starches and sugars,
company spokesmen said.
