Chris Carpenter spent some of his career busting through a wall
known as mediocrity. Once he crashed through, there was no looking
back. After going 49-50 in Toronto from 1997-2002, he won 15
games for the Cardinals in 2004. Last year, he went 21-5 and won the
NL Cy Young award. He is 39-12 since joining St. Louis, including 3-
2 this year. Staying on top can be tough, though, so every day
