Article: Salvation Army Cuts Local Link To United Way

The Salvation Army's National Capital and Virginia division said yesterday that it is severing ties with the local United Way because recent changes in United Way fund-raising undercut traditional inner-city social services.

The decision ends a 48-year relationship between the agencies, said Lt. Col. Warren Fulton, the Salvation Army division's commander.

Under United Way's new system, more nonprofit groups qualify to draw on the pool of donations, and individual donors are permitted to restrict their gifts to a favorite charity or to one geographic location. United Way says the approach is more inclusive and responds to what donors wanted.
