Reza Pahlavi, son of the late shah of Iran, says he realized that up to about $24 million of his family's money had been squandered the day he stared into an empty safe-deposit box at a Swiss bank.

It was April 12, 1989, and Pahlavi, who was looking for his own financial records supposedly in safekeeping in the deposit box, was escorted brusquely from the Geneva vault and informed by a bank director that he should not have been given access to it. As described in a lawsuit now before a federal appeals court in Richmond, Pahlavi believes he was betrayed by Ahmad Ali Massoud Ansari, one of his closest aides.
