One of the benefits of living at the end of the 20th century is that almost any problem, it seems, can be solved by a new drug or a new machine or by Microsoft. Whatever the problem, chances are it has a high-tech solution.

Which is what makes the Columbia Council's solution to a festering problem so quaint.

For years, Canada geese have been making a home out of Lake Kittamaqundi, floating in its temperate waters and gorging themselves on food handed out by pedestrians who think the geese are oh-so-cute. They waddle around, go "honk honk" and nibble food out of your hand, and children just love 'em.

If sweetness could kill, there would be no survivors at Lake Kittamaqundi.
