America Online Inc. learned the hard way that English isn't the
only language spoken in the global village of cyberspace.
The world's largest on-line service yesterday apologized for
banning foreign language messages from electronic bulletin boards
where its subscribers comment on international sports topics, such
as Argentine soccer star Diego Maradona, Futbol Club Barcelona and
the Mexican Cup soccer standings.
America Online spokeswoman Pam McGraw said the English-only
policy was part of a larger effort "to ensure that there is a
comfortable community for all members." Though almost anything goes
on the virtually unregulated Internet, America Online prohibits
disruptive behavior ...
