When Peter and Richie Vanderwarker set about remodeling their
Newton home, they, like many couples, knew they wanted their kitchen
to play several roles. They wanted it to be a place where they could
display art and collectibles - Peter is a photographer whose work
frequently appears in the Globe Magazine, and Richie, a color
consultant, keeps eye-catching arrays of everything from turquoise
jewelry to carved wooden chickens. They also wanted a place where
they could sit quietly and read; Peter wanted a corner where he could
