The return of Eddie Murray to the Baltimore Orioles last week
was a bittersweet event -- sweet because he is a terrific
ballplayer, bitter because no word better describes Eddie Murray.
Sports fans like to feel as if they know their superstars. But
they seldom gleaned much more about Murray than his sullen glare
would reveal about him, which is to say, nothing. He can be grouchy
with fans, surly with strangers, and he has always refused to talk
to the press. He commemorated the occasion of his 3,000th hit with a
pouty "no comment." ("That's better than we usually get," one
veteran sportswriter observed. "He usually tells us to go to
hell.")
