The coming split between one of the region's largest doctor groups
and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care is making some senior citizens
nervous and has sparked a marketing battle between Harvard and rival
Tufts Health Plan.
The tension is the result of Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates'
decision last spring to not renew its contract with Harvard Pilgrim
to provide care for seniors enrolled in Medicare Advantage health
plans. Instead, Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates which has about
500 doctors in the Boston area and Dedham Medical Associates, a
smaller sister organization, plan to treat seniors who are members of
Tufts Health Plan's Medicare Preferred plan.
