Robert J. Dole said today that Pennsylvania Avenue in front of
the White House, closed last year because of fear of terrorism,
should be reopened to traffic.
"My view is they ought to open it up. There ought to be other
ways to protect the president," the presumptive Republican
presidential nominee said in Washington before embarking on a
three-day campaign swing to the West.
Dole's remarks came after he read a statement condemning the
bombing Saturday at Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta, as well as
the bombings in Saudi Arabia of U.S. military missions and the
apparent explosion of TWA Flight 800.
