Sometimes you feel sorry for a restaurant. You're having a nice meal, the food is quite good, the service impeccable, and even the music suits the place. Then you look around and realize you're the only table dining at 8:30 on a Friday night. Cue the chirping crickets.

That's what happened to us last week at Panificio, a stylish new Back Bay bistro and bakery on the corner of Massachusetts and Commonwealth avenues. After we pass the bakery area, with display cases housing pretty little lemon meringue tarts and slices of pumpkin cheesecake (made on site), we tuck into a corner table in the dining room.
