India's decision Tuesday to try to block U.N. consideration of
a draft treaty that would ban all nuclear testing may have angered
the leaders of other nations around the world, but it has produced
only positive political dividends at home.
From the ruling leftist coalition to the centrist Congress
Party and the conservative Bharatiya Janata Party, a broad political
consensus supported India's decision to oppose the nuclear test ban
treaty as currently drafted.
Recent opinion polls taken in the world's largest democracy
have shown strong support for India keeping its nuclear options open
to answer perceived threats from two nuclear-capable neighbors,
