Much of the literature inflicted upon us in high school was so
ponderous that the list was assumed to have been drawn up by a
malevolent teacher determined to provide contemporary examples of
the pain and suffering we were learning about in history,
specifically the Inquisition, when infidels were punished by
thumbscrews, foot-crushers and other attention-getters.
"Silas Marner" leaps to mind, along with "Wuthering Heights"
and anything written by William Makepeace Thackeray, and if you
staggered through "Canterbury Tales," you know precisely what Woody
Allen was talking about when he advised students to avoid any
course where "Beowulf" was required ...
