Roosters everywhere might crow for joy if they knew of the recent achievements of a small Boston biotechnology company.

Genzyme Corp. has found an efficient way to brew in the lab an expensive natural lubricant used by eye surgeons. Up to now, the clear, sticky fluid had to be extracted from rooster combs.

Laboratory-brewed hyaluronic acid, with its broad potential applications in ophthalmic and orthopedic surgery, could be a hot seller for Genzyme. The company just struck a marketing agreement with Alcon Laboratories, an eye-care subsidiary of Nestle S.A., and tests are under way on a half-dozen other uses.
