NDJAMENA, Chad - The government of President Hissene Habre said
yesterday that fighting has broken out between Libyan and Chadian
troops around the northern town of Bardai. Meanwhile, rebels once
backed by Libya proclaimed an official alliance with the Chadian
army. There were few details of the conflict at Bardai, the capital
of former president Goukouni Oueddei's rebel forces in the Tibesti
Mountains. Official sources, speaking on condition of anonymity,
said the battle erupted Thursday and several tanks and heavy
weapons had been captured. ...
