Robert Farmer, a political junkie with an uncanny knack for
fund-raising, is the behind-the-scenes money man who would be
charged with bankrolling a run for the presidency by Gov. Dukakis.
He says he can raise a minimum of $6.5 million for a Dukakis
presidential campaign, mostly in Massachusetts and the rest in the
big-money states of New York and California. If Dukakis were to do
well in the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary, money
would be no problem, he says.
Farmer is one of the reasons Dukakis is being taken so
seriously right now on the national scene. There is an ante to get
into the poker game of presidential politics, and Farmer is someone
