FLORENCE - Smarting from a sharp decline in tourism last year, this city renowned for its Renaissance art and architecture is beckoning visitors with a dazzling array of exhibits and special cultural events.

American desertions led an 18 percent drop in the number of tourists who visited the Tuscan capital in the first eight months of 1986 as compared with the same period in 1985.
