FLORENCE - Smarting from a sharp decline in tourism last
year, this city renowned for its Renaissance art and architecture
is beckoning visitors with a dazzling array of exhibits and special
cultural events.
American desertions led an 18 percent drop in the number of
tourists who visited the Tuscan capital in the first eight months
of 1986 as compared with the same period in 1985.
Art treasures, such as Michelangelo's "David" and
Botticelli's "Birth of Venus," and architectural treasures, such as
the shop-lined Ponte Vecchio, a 14th-century bridge, attracted just
131,000 American tourists in the first eight months of 1986 -- 65
