NUEVA CONCEPCION, Guatemala - On Sundays, hundreds of
peasants travel east across the burning coastal plain of southern
Guatemala, past the vast plantations that stretch from the volcanos
to the Pacific, to see a rural priest who is widely considered one
of the most powerful men in the country.
The priest is Rev. Andres de Jesus Giron. His message,
delivered with an inspired force that can move his followers to
tears, is among the most provocative in the language of Guatemalan
politics. It is a call for land.
"Those of us who believe in God are prepared to give our lives
