MANAMA, Bahrain - Even as reports reached here this week of
Iran's deepest penetration into Iraq, Bahraini officials and
diplomatic sources were confident the tiny Persian Gulf state is
not seriously threatened by the developments.
A senior government official said he did not consider his
country vulnerable to Iran, which lost control of Bahrain in 1783
and has coveted the prosperous island emirate ever since.
Although only 300 miles from the major battlefield in Iraq
near the head of the gulf, and even closer to the air attacks on
gulf shipping, Bahrain has managed to stay out of the conflict
since it began more than six years ago.
As an Arab state, Bahrain tacitly supports Iraq ...
