PAWTUXET VILLAGE, R.I. - In 1772, a ragged band of patriots
seized and razed his majesty's ship Gaspee as it lay aground at
Namquit Point. According to tradition, the schooner's crew was
brought ashore and jailed on Peck Lane in this small harbor town.
People here take their history seriously. Gaspee Day is
celebrated with breakfasts and a parade, and visitors from
throughout New England come to stroll brick sidewalks and view
dozens of 18th- and 19th-century homes.
So perhaps it's no surprise that some of the citizenry have
reacted with rebellious zeal to the plans of a Coventry, R.I.,
developer who wants to build luxury condominiums on the waterfront
at Peck Lane.
