Every Fourth of July, Philadelphia makes a big to-do about being
the birthplace of the Declaration of Independence. Nine of the
signers were from Pennsylvania, but after all, they didn't have far
to ride.
The Chronicler is delighted to point out that Maryland and
Virginia provided 12 of the 56 men who did the declaring, according
to the fact-filled "Signers of the Declaration," published by the
National Park Service.
The District itself counts two signers as residents,
admittedly after the fact. John Adams of Massachusetts in November
1800 became the first president to live in the new Executive
Mansion. In March 1801 the Declaration's author, Thomas Jefferson of
Virginia, moved in.
