The problem," declares Tom Stoppard, "is in the difference
between theater as text and theater as event." Thus his deft
versions of Schnitzler's "Dalliance" ("Liebelei") and "Undiscovered
Country" ("Das weite Land") cannot be considered literal
translations of the great Austrian playwright but actable English
transcripts which compose an homage from one working man of the
theater to another.
"Undiscovered Country," the more elaborate of the duo, was
