In the freezing harbor a red - reasted merganser surfaces with a
fish in its saw-toothed beak. A nearby herring gull lifts itself
into the air and pounces on the smaller merganser. The smaller
merganser submerges immediately. Unable to dive and follow the
merganser, or catch his own fish, the gull keeps vigil knowing the
merganser can't stay down longer than 40 or 50 seconds. The
merganser appears again and the gull lifts himself out of the water
and pounces on the duck, down goes the duck, still holding the
fish. And, again a third replay. The fourth time the merganser
surfaces a little farther away and quickly lifts his head and snaps
his neck back forcing the fish, head first, down ...
