Article: LBJ STORY COMES UP SHORT

There aren't many of us left - you and I and the milkman, perhaps -- whose lives have yet to be dramatized on television.

The networks already have gone through Peter the Great, Albert Speer, Marco Polo, Grace Kelly, Columbus, Lincoln, Twain, Patton, Washington, Hitler, Hoffa, Ike, Elizabeth Taylor and Mata Hari, not to mention the Osmond Family, and don't forget the Kennedys; John, Robert, Jackie and Teddy Jr. makes four.

Television does many things badly, as we know, but it reaches contemptible levels when it attempts to reshape public figures and rewrite history. At a minimum, these pseudo-historical dramas oversimplify reality, and often as not, they pervert it.
