Pentagon spending in Massachusetts accounts for 7 percent of
the state's economic activity, is concentrated in 16 cities and
towns and is shared by fewer than 1 percent of all Bay State
companies, according to a controversial state study released
yesterday.
Cities with the largest share of the military dollar in
Massachusetts are, in order, Lynn, Bedford, Andover, Wayland,
Pittsfield, Lowell and Cambridge, according to the Division of
Employment Security report.
The study is the second in a month by the Dukakis
administration that downplays the connection between the state's
strong economy and US military spending. The new study is
