In Newton one day recently, four children, two from Puerto
Rico, one from Chile and another from Guatemala, filed into a
classroom at the Ward Elementary School.
For 45 minutes, their teacher, Lynn Scheller, and the
children, who range in age from 10 to 12, read about the history
and culture of South American Indians.
It was a normal social studies class in every way except one:
the discussion was in Spanish and so was the textbook.
In Lawrence that day, 15 children sat around tables in a
kindergarten class at the Lahey School. Under the supervision of
teacher Luz Biscotti, the children put together puzzles to develop
