In the aftermath of President Reagan's decision to support an
enormous atom- smasher to probe the deepest mysteries of the
universe, physicists are girding for an intense debate over the
project's $4.4 billion cost.
The appeal of the Superconducting Supercollider, or SSC, is
clear. It would be the world's most powerful particle accelerator,
the springboard for a great leap into the scientific unknown.
"We have learned an enormous amount" in the past 10 or 20
years about the fundamental building blocks and forces of nature,
said Lawrence Sulak, head of the physics department at Boston
University and a strong supporter of the Supercollider, "and they
