For most of my life I have suffered from midwinter aphasia, a
condition that tends to make me forget, from year to year, what
February is like in New England. So each year February comes as a
shock, which tends to make it seem even worse.
But this year I have decided to adopt a new attitude toward
February. I am trying to like it. A few days after February ends
I'll be one year older, officially. That's reason enough to enjoy
this month while I can. So I am trying to remember that hope
springs eternal, that it's always darkest before the dawn, and that
if winter comes, can spring be far behind?
February is named after Februus, the Roman god who presided
