Hezbollah, Arabic for "The Party of God," was founded after Israel's invasion of southern Lebanon in 1982. It is a loose umbrella organization that includes Shiite Moslems who derive inspiration and support from Iran.

Hezbollah grew both from strong efforts by Tehran to spread its Islamic revolution and from an indigenous radicalization of Lebanese Shiites, long neglected by Beirut and further harassed by Israeli occupation policies.
