I came to fly - ying through taxidermy. That is, my father
wouldn't let me practice taxidermy but he would let me practice
fly-tying. It was one thing, he said, to have the feathers and fur
of dead birds and animals lying around the house; it was quite
another thing to have the birds and animals themselves.
Because of its beauty, my first dry fly was the Fan-Wing Royal
Coachman. I built it with materials that came with a kit purchased
from a mail-order company, the same one that sold Authentic Black
Forest daggers for 99 cents. With that company, you always got what
you paid for.
The kit included a booklet that described more than 150 trout
