Why can't Bob Dole be my Bob Dole? Why does he insist on being
his Bob Dole? My Bob Dole is reasonably conservative, old and
therefore wise, the embodiment of Midwestern values, a Carl Sandburg
sort of guy (he sometimes didn't get it right, either) who was brave
as a soldier and braver still as a wounded vet, and who is the very
model of rectitude. That Bob Dole is all right with me.
Ah, but Bob Dole's Bob Dole is a snarling, mean lout. He
doesn't have the good sense to simply say he spoke incorrectly about
how cigarettes are not necessarily addictive and how, when you think
about it, even milk can be bad for you. This statement, so stupid as
