The Howard County Board of Education is considering a proposal that
would set a new standard for academic toughness in the Washington
area by forbidding high school students to play sports or
participate in extracurricular activities if they fail any class.
Students now must maintain a 2.0 grade point average to play
sports or take part in extracurricular activities, although there
are several loopholes that have complicated enforcement. In addition
to closing the loopholes while maintaining the grade requirement,
the new policy would add the requirement that students receive a
passing grade in every course.
