ALEPPO, Syria - It is a pity that American travelers have
been discouraged from visiting Syria by a recent State Department
advisory warning that "potential for terror exists" here. At the
same time, the Syrian government has done little to promote among
outsiders an appreciation of this extraordinary country.
Politics aside, Syria is one of the gems of the Middle East, a
garden of riches in Damascus as well as the ancient city of Aleppo.
Tourists bold enough to come to the region should not write off the
possibility of a visit.
Despite the poor state of diplomatic relations between the
United States and Syria, tourist visas are available from Syrian
embassies, and Western visitors ...
