WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Ellis Burks is honest with himself. He
knows that only by hard work and superior talent, not necessarily
in that order, can he hope to get to the big leagues.
At 22, Burks is right on schedule for full-time duty with the
Red Sox. He has been the last two years at New Britain, the club's
Double-A affiliate. Because of his developing skills and relative
inexperience, he would now seem destined for Pawtucket, where a
full season of Triple-A ball would prepare him for the ultimate
jump to the big leagues.
But that timetable may change dramatically. The jump-off date
might be April 6. With injuries clouding the immediate future of
Dave Henderson and Dwight Evans, ...
